What makes Knysna so Mysterious?

Walk or drive through the indigenous forest surrounding Knysna, and you'll feel its spirit. Elephants, leopards, Knysna loeries, and narina trogons thrive in its shade, while around 50 species of trees, from towering yellowwoods to stinkwood and wild fig, create its lush canopy. Indigenous people sustainably used the forest's resources for thousands of years, but when colonists arrived, unsustainable logging practices began. Timber was needed for construction, tools, and furniture, leading to heavy harvesting until 1939 when logging was banned.

Since 2009, much of the Knysna Forest and the Knysna Lagoon have been included in the Garden Route National Park, a vast mosaic of nature reserves spanning over 160,000 hectares. The rich history and beauty of the Knysna Forests make it a must-see destination, where every path and tree seems to whisper secrets of the past
